Our Commitment to Accessibility

This accessibility statement applies to the content published on the Equality and Human Rights in the Public Service portal (elearning.ihrec.ie).

It does not apply to any content hosted on third party websites.

This portal is run by Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC).

We want as many people as possible to be able to use this portal.

For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software such as ReachDeck, JAWS and NVDA
  • skip to the main content when using a keyboard
  • listen to most of the website using a speech recognition software

Key features implemented into the portal to meet AA standards are:

  • Good use of colour contrast and font size used that conform to brand guidelines
  • Alternative text provided for content related images
  • Title text provided to give more descriptive meanings for buttons, clickable icon graphics and links e.g. “Open in new window”.
  • Page content structured logically that can easily be navigated and read by a screen reader
  • Hierarchy of headings
  • Meaningful headings and labels used
  • Correct mark-up used for elements on the page e.g. heading and paragraph tags, buttons, etc
  • Focus states added for users who navigate a website with a keyboard
  • Every feature on the page can still be used when the text size is increased by 200% and content reflows into a single column when increased to 400%
  • All pages are responsive and work either in landscape or portrait
  • Descriptive links used to let users know where a link will take them or what downloadable linked content is
  • Features, components and elements are consistent and behave the same way across multiple pages
  • Irish Sign Language (ISL) and subtitles embedded directly into learning-based videos
  • Form validation has been added that will clearly indicate to learners any errors such as missing typing their password or email, or missing a required form field

Less accessible parts of the portal

Some parts of this portal are not fully accessibly, for example:

  • You cannot modify the colours, contrast levels or font. These have been predefined to conform to the IHREC brand to meet AA standards
  • You cannot modify the line height or spacing of text
  • Some images are not text free but we have ensured that alternative text has been provided for content based images
  • Some documents which are in PDF or Word format may not be fully accessible

ReachDeck

This portal incorporates ReachDeck, a digital inclusion toolbar, which helps to improve the accessibility and readability of your online content for people with reading difficulties.

Compliance status

This portal complies with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard.
